If you live near Lorong Stangee and Katong, you might have noticed that Mei Yuen Restaurant, a vintage eatery since the 1980s, has recently closed its doors, leaving many residents puzzled.

This old-school restaurant which featured an iconic light-green glaze tile flooring had 2 stalls: one offering roasted duck, char siew and wanton mee, and the other specialising in roasted pork and chicken rice.

Despite the absence of official news and inconclusive Google results which stated that the establishment was still in operation, I took it upon myself to investigate.

I eventually found out that the business will be moving to a stall located within Brunners Coffeeshop, just opposite its old premises. My initial reaction was, “Wow! That’s the same kopitiam where my favourite beef Wellington from Meet 4 Meat and Katong Jago Carrot Cake is.”

The new Mei Yuen kopitiam stall is set to open on 1 Mar 2024. It will be taking over 天乐 (Tian Le) a stall known for chicken rice and roasted meats. For those wondering about the offerings, rest assured, it will feature the same menu as their previous restaurant, focusing on roasted meats, wanton mee, and chicken rice.

Whether it’s due to increasing skyrocketing rental prices or simply downsizing the stall to reduce manpower and workload, we look forward to welcoming Mei Yuen’s comeback in March!
